Ariane Crovisier

In constant training and exploration for 15 years through independent studies in sculpture, modeling, ceramics, and stone carving, I have pursued various approaches with different sculptors. Since then, my process has become essentially self-taught, although I enjoy working in collective studios to feel the creative emulation and to encounter different perspectives and techniques. I explore the void, the solid, the third dimension, and the relief that is felt by touching the living surface of the earth, moving toward a sensitive exchange. It is a game of hide-and-seek between myself and what is born from the physical struggle with the material. Something circulates from the inside out. I establish a dialogue with the clay: at the point where it answers me, resists me, guides me, and calls me toward the unexpected. I never know in advance the path that will be taken... My artistic research is imbued with my interest in the void and the solid in the Chinese tradition. Each work breathes with its voids and solids; we circulate within the sculpture and within the thought. It is a form of energy that I seek to transcribe in my art: a living void, a hollow that is momentum, an active void, under tension, that comes to instill respiration, breath, and to give space another dimension that awakens imagination and creativity. There resides a certain strength in this void. It must be experienced, lived—this void, which is also for me a form of lack that makes us desire and move forward. This void is necessary and very present when I work, and it transpires in the troglodytic forms that can be found in my pieces. Life is a winding path that I try to express in my sculptures. This moving thread guides me, weaving an enigma that I seek to make my audience feel, who in turn create within the forms they project onto it. The encounter with my audience is essential to me. I enjoy hearing what each person sees in it, in order to discover in turn the hidden, the unknown that resides in my own creation. In search of an aerial beauty, of a perpetual movement, I stretch, hollow out, pierce, and dance with the material, which I dress in monochromes or light and elegant color combinations. I often deposit an emotion into the piece to transform it, to stretch it. Thus, the emotion changes, takes on other shades, other forms. This movement extends when I make my sculptures transposable in different directions, visible from different angles, offering the possibility of an interaction with the viewer, who can then manipulate it, turn it over, and dance with new volumes.
