Studio

Born in 1994 in France, Tatiana Hr. lives and works in the Paris region.

She studied art history at the Sorbonne University Paris 1 (Master's in Art History Research, 2017) and lacquer art at Olivier de Serres (Arts and Crafts Diploma, lacquer specialization, 2019). Tatiana Hr. then trained with master lacquer artists from 2019 to 2022 in France, Japan, Vietnam, and India.

Her artistic work focuses on cultural and natural metamorphoses, as well as their manipulations and adaptations. She seeks to highlight the multiplicity of living forms through a reappropriation of the lacquer medium, which lies at the heart of her reflections.

Tatiana Hr. discovered lacquer in 2013 during a conservation internship at the French Museum Research and Restoration Center. The sumptuous decorations of a Japanese cabinet stirred inexpressible resonances within her. Captivated by the voluptuousness and depth of its ornamentation, this encounter sparked a true aesthetic and cultural shock. This discovery quickly transformed into an obsession, leading her along the mysterious paths of the Far East and our ancestors, with the earliest examples dating back to the Neolithic era.

By virtue of its inscription in time and space and its relationship to humanity, lacquer appears as a remedy to the increasing speed of the world, a counterpoint to the suffocating influence of a present that exhausts itself in immediacy. An intimate journey beneath the surface, these lacquers are the stage for a drive-based expenditure and time-consuming introspection. Simultaneously a medium and a primary motif, lacquer acts in its creation as the driving source of a fertile endeavor, an essential fluid where the organic reference is not the finality but a process—a metaphor for encounter and connection.

Originally used as a surface coating technique, lacquer finds another purpose and releases a new language in her artistic approach.

It reveals, conceals, syncretizes, and sometimes allows one to glimpse, through its innumerable layers, the poetry of singular and universal spaces, celebrating the vitality of a fertile nature of which we are the product.

It is through this extraordinary material that Tatiana Hr. lets her thoughts and imaginary worlds flow, discovers the invisible, reconnects with the distant origins of our humanity, and rethinks spirituality. The stories composed are invitations to travel, introspections, a reversal of perspective where a profusion of living organisms, symbols, and ancestral myths is organized. Through lacquer, the artist finds a new space-time to explore, nourished by multiple references.
