Florence Wuillai

For six years, I have specialized in the technique of wool felting. Through this process, I seek to promote French wools. I am committed to studying this animal fiber because, through my experiments, I realize that it is the guardian of a strong technical, historical, and civilizational heritage.

In France, the wool industry is currently being rebuilt. It represents a resource of about 10 thousand tonnes of greasy wool, which many professions are connected to: breeders, shearers, sorters, shepherds, traders, etc.

Taking an interest in wool means, first and foremost, exploring its origins through the professions of breeder and shepherd. As old as domestication itself, pastoralism advocates for harmony between territory, humans, fauna, and flora. It is a breeding technique that is more than contemporary in the face of the challenges we currently face.

Wool rhymes with diversity. Indeed, there are 55 sheep breeds in France, which means 55 different wool fibers. By situating myself within a territory, I set out to meet local sheep breeds and study them to uncover the potential of their wool.

The unique pieces or projects I develop reveal the singularity of these animal fibers. They also bear witness to a reflection I am conducting on the industry: ensuring that the material becomes a full-fledged livestock product again, recreating links between stakeholders: from breeding to processing, and placing breeders or shepherds at the center of the objects.

More broadly, through this animal fiber, my ambition is to participate in and boost a rural economy that faces ecological and social challenges.

Wool felting is a technique that I am passionate about for several reasons. It is a process that is only possible with wool because it is composed of scales. This felting power opens up a field of possibilities and notably allows for the hybridization of techniques. Finally, it is a precious know-how that must be preserved and passed on.
