GAÏA WORKSHOP

Ceramicist, PIGNAN (34)

Nathalie reveals how "the element of the unexpected and magic," combined with her meticulous work with enamels, transforms her pieces into miniature landscapes to behold.

Tell us your story, how did you find your calling?

Discovering ceramics was a revelation after years of exploring other mediums like painting and jewelry making. What immediately captivated me was the direct contact with clay, a living material that holds the memory of every gesture. Working with ceramics has allowed me to reconnect with a slow, soothing rhythm, far from the hustle and bustle, where every step counts: shaping, firing, glazing, observing.

How would you describe your style and artistic approach in a few words?

My work reflects a constant search for balance between simplicity and complexity. The forms are often refined, leaving ample space for the magic of the crystals that adorn the surface. I like my pieces to be both rooted in artisanal tradition and open to a contemporary interpretation, where design meets nature.

What themes or subjects inspire you the most in your work?

Nature, the ocean, and travel deeply nourish my world. I seek to translate the fluidity of water, the raw beauty of landscapes, and the shifting light on a surface. These influences blend with my taste for contemporary design and objects that invite contemplation.

How do you work?

Since September, I have been sharing a studio with a ceramicist friend—a warm and inspiring space where our ideas and skills intersect. At the same time, I am building my own studio with my husband and friends, an exciting and symbolic adventure that will soon provide me with a custom-built place to continue my artistic journey.

In my work, I favor two main clays: stoneware and porcelain. Stoneware, robust and authentic, allows me to create pieces with organic and natural textures, while porcelain, fine and luminous, enhances the details and crystalline glazes that I love so much. Each material offers me a unique palette of expression, a balance between the raw strength of the earth and the delicacy of the forms.

Every day in the studio is an adventure filled with discoveries and challenges. There is the profound joy when a piece comes out of the kiln with perfectly formed crystals, like a reward after hours of meticulous work. But there are also failures—crystals that do not develop, colors that disappoint. These unexpected events teach me patience and remind me that creation is always a dialogue with the elements.

Every object I create carries this measure of uncertainty, spontaneous beauty, and poetry. My wish is that my decorative pieces invite those who discover them to take a moment to contemplate the living in a crystallized form.

Do you have a specific technique, a particular expertise? Without giving away all your secrets, have you developed your own methods and techniques?

I specialize in decorative ceramics, with a particular expertise in crystalline glazes. This unique technique involves creating crystals that form directly on the surface of the piece during high-temperature firing. Each firing is a complex alchemy of time, temperature, and glaze composition. The result is always unique: organic patterns unfurl in crystalline arabesques, reminiscent of natural phenomena such as the formation of ice crystals. I love this element of the unexpected and the magical, where every piece becomes a miniature landscape to contemplate.

Tell us about your daily life, your constraints, your joys, your successes…

Every day in the studio begins with a dialogue with the clay. There is that simple yet essential pleasure of preparing the material, of feeling the resistance of stoneware or the almost silky softness of porcelain beneath my hands. This daily routine is made of moments of concentration, where every movement counts, but also of surprises, for ceramics remains an unpredictable art.

One of the great joys of this craft is seeing a creation come to life in a customer's hands. Receiving my first orders was a milestone, like a precious validation of my work. More recently, I had the honor of being selected to join an art boutique this spring. These successes fuel my passion and push me to always go further in my creative research.

But this craft would be nothing without the little moments of magic: the satisfaction of taking a perfectly crystallized piece out of the kiln, the wonder at an unexpected glaze shade, or simply contemplating the fruit of many hours of work. These moments give my practice its full meaning and are an invitation to continue exploring.

A message to convey, anything else you would like to share?

Every piece I create tells a story: that of an encounter between raw material, my hands, and the magic of fire. What sets me apart is my constant search for poetry in the details. Through the delicate technique of crystalline glazes, I shape objects where crystals unfurl like natural landscapes frozen in clay.

My work is rooted in an authentic and sensory approach, inspired by nature, the ocean, and contemporary design. I love creating pieces that touch both the eyes and the heart—objects meant to be contemplated, carrying beauty and emotion.

By choosing my work, you are embracing much more than a simple object: you are welcoming a part of a unique artisanal universe, crafted with passion and meticulous care.
