PHANE TRIBOT LA SPIÈRE
ARTIST DESIGNER, MARSEILLE (13)
The artist and designer tells us how her studies and career path made her aware of a reality she is now committed to fighting: the negative impact of "fast decor."
Tell us your story, how did you find your calling?
I studied at an industrial design school, and today I realize the harmful impact of fast decor. In my practice, I value time and reflection over overproduction.
How would you describe your style and your artistic approach in a few words?
A practice built around classic tableware quickly leads me to detach myself from it, in order to develop my own language. This is how wood and ceramic meet to give birth to unique pieces of character, connected by the fold.
I like to build pieces that go against the industrial process; in this sense, I impose manual labor and complex shapes to prevent the possibility of using a machine.
What themes or subjects inspire you the most in your work?
I draw inspiration from the world of ceramics; glazes, firings, throwing techniques...
But also from my surroundings, encounters, conversations, certain exhibitions, or other designers' practices that surprise me.
How do you work?
When I have an idea, I like to quickly write it down or sketch it somewhere (sometimes in the notes on my phone), and then I draw and do 3D modeling. When I need to produce them, I juggle between two studios: a ceramics workshop and a woodworking shop, both located in the heart of Marseille.
Do you have a particular technique or specific expertise? Without revealing all your secrets, have you developed your own methods and techniques?
I enjoy reinterpreting glazing techniques. In my process, my pieces are glazed and fired, and for some pieces, the colors are handcrafted to recreate the appearance of enamel. By stepping back from my work, I sometimes, when a glaze is particularly successful, photograph the pieces and create prints from them, like paintings.
Tell us about your daily life, your constraints, your joys, your successes…
I organized an exhibition in Paris with two other artists on the theme of the Dressing Room. For it, I made 3 handbags and a valet stand, which I renamed the Servente; one of my biggest pieces! I was very proud :)
A message to convey, something you would like to share?
I will soon be doing a photoshoot of my bags that you will be able to admire on my social media!
