" I explore the bark, the grain, the tactile sensations, the cracks and the scars of time, the fineness of the texture, the design of the veins, the distinct scent of each wood species. "

JEAN-LOUIS HAMEAU

H WORKSHOP

Woodturner and woodcarver, Tournefeuille (31)

Jean-Louis tells us the story of his personal and intimate relationship with a material that has always fascinated him: wood

Tell us your story, how did you find your calling?

As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by woodworking. My first handmade carpentry pieces date back to the 60s in my father's workshop.
Later, alongside my professional career in various fields—national education and then retail—I enrolled in an Adult Vocational Training program in carpentry (AFPA) at the age of 30, without, however, embarking on a career in the craft.
It was only upon reaching retirement age that I set up my own woodworking and woodcarving workshop, parallel to my current activity as a photovoltaic farm operator.
Meeting the instructors at the prestigious École Escoulen located in the Var, which specializes in woodturning, was a turning point for me.
I participated in the various workshops offered by this school for nearly three years, and I now dedicate my free time to woodcarving and woodturning, which have become a true passion.

How would you describe your style and your artistic approach in a few words?

I seek a sensual connection with wood, an intimate relationship with the piece of wood I choose, or rather, the one that chooses me. I explore the bark, the grain, the tactile sensations, the flaws and scars of time, the fineness of the texture, the design of the veins, and the unique scent of each species.
I then imagine how I will approach the transformation process to highlight the wood’s beauty.
As I turn, each subsequent movement reveals itself, without me truly knowing the final form. My initial intention may shift several times throughout the process, particularly when turning green wood.

What themes or subjects inspire you most in your work?

The material "wood" itself is, along with nature, an infinite source of inspiration. I am particularly drawn to the design of the marine animal world and terrestrial or aquatic plants, leaves and seeds that present themselves to the gaze.
The curves offered by vegetation are at once unique, pure, and perfect.

How do you work?

I only use local reclaimed or recycled wood, trees felled by my neighbors, sawmill offcuts, and dry wood slabs kept by private individuals.
I have a small 30 m2 workshop that is very well-equipped with high-quality machinery and tools, whether for carpentry, woodturning, or carving.
I use natural finishing products: top-quality oil, wax, and lacquer.

Tell us about your daily life, your constraints, your joys, your successes…

Rather intuitive in my day-to-day life, I let the day unfold while avoiding constraints as much as possible, and I go to the studio when I am rested and mindful. The studio is like a haven of peace, and throwing or sculpting are a bit like my personal yoga and a form of meditation.
I only throw or sculpt when I feel a particular state of serenity that calms me.
I hope in this way that my pieces also transmit peace, balance, and a certain sense of well-being to those who encounter them.
